The Early Days of Weimar America?

Spooky -- and there's a treasure trove of other spooky clips out there too.

But I think this is also a sign of how thin McCain's support has become. All he has left is the radical, Anne Coulter fringe so there's no moderates in the crowd to keep a lid on things.

But McCain needs to get in front of this and start tamping down the anger. Thankfully we're starting to see the media focus on this story (even moderate Republicans) and hopefully that will convince McCain that this strategy isn't the way to do things.

Spooky is right. I found it very eerie watching this. I think it's not just a cliche to say there is a zombie-like quality to some of these folks.

I also agree that, right now, these crowds are mostly a sign of how much trouble McCain is in. But I worry about what we might see if Obama -- through little fault of his own -- has to govern an era of very hard economic times. There's a chance his entire term will be miserable and the Republicans could sweep back in to power riding this kind of anger. If things take a dark turn in America (i.e. even worse than the Bush administration) it will take folks like this and a leader like Palin.

But hey, there's also a chance things won't be so bad and Obama and the Democrats will dominate Reagan-like for over a decade. Many demographic trends are in their favor (the Republicans have to be fearful of how much their support is skewed in older generations, for example).

As Yogi Berra would say. It's hard to make predictions, especially about the future.

Or dominate Roosevelt-like for two decades! My guess is that's got Republicans somewhat nervous.
